Civil War  Tall Bookcase

This tall book case comes closest to a perfect reproduction. Even when I really like an existing design, I usually need the piece to be slightly larger, I prefer some technique over one used in the original construction, or I don't have the exact materials.

In any case, that has not happened with this bookcase. Originally made from oak, this bookcase which was found in Natchez, Mississippi was a perfect size. One of the more enjoyable aspects of woodworking is trying to build a piece of furniture that looks to be over 100 years old. So it is with this bookcase, and twice over. I chose the design of this bookcase from one made by a confederate furniture maker in the Deep South.

All parts are precut and sanded and all the joints have been cut. Simply assemble the bookcase and apply the finish of your choice. All you'll need is the finish, some wood glue, 4 bar clamps, a drill and 1/8" drill bit, a flat blade screwdriver, a Phillips head screwdriver and a few spare hours. Complete assembly instructions as well as instructions on how to apply a beautiful long lasting finish are included. Not only will you save quite a bit of money but you'll also get the enjoyment and satisfaction of putting it together yourself.

I did not stray from the original dimensions, However, some aspects were improved with because the frog leg brass hinges found on the original were mortised into the door and an uneven gap between the case sides and door existed. This is the only item in which my design strays from the original. We located the brass frog leg hinges on the door frame face so it looks somewhat more pleasing to the eye.

This bookcase is available in kit form for those who enjoy building their own furniture. All of the hard work is done and you get to enjoy the finishing and assembly yourself.

Combine with a matching end table kit, desk or hall tree. Available in: Cherry, Walnut, Oak, and Maple.

Tall Civil War

NO Plywood. The back of this bookcase is made from sycamore boards, just like the original.

This results in a tall bookcase which is timeless in design and gives the bookcase the ability to fit into almost any décor found in your home.

As is the case with much civil war style furniture, the essential decorative elements of all versions of this piece are the construction details, including the floating back for stability and the classic mortise and tenon construction.

In the construction of the original, all of these elements are left intact, but the method of mounting the shelves are improved, because the original shelves were end nailed thru the sides creating a worm hole look. A small beaded crown cab be kept or left off..

This timeless civil war bookcase lets you keep a whole bookshelf full of books close at hand next to your desk, couch or reading chair. With wide compartments on its three 9" deep shelves there is space for up to approximately sixteen feet of books or magazines. The clever design means allows you'll to adjust for any height of shelf.
