Civil War Era Tools
Rarely do you see any turnings (Items produced on a
lathe). Sometimes you see some carvings, but they are rare in any
surviving antique furniture from the civil war period. Most of the civil
war furniture was hand built using a bow saw, hand plane, brace and bit
chisel and mallet. Sometimes the tops were from one piece of lumber, other
times they were glued up and on some of the rougher pieces, the furniture
tops were just butt jointed together and nailed. We glue boards together
to build the tops of our furniture kits.
